Girl Maths… what even is this?

Is it a new phenomenon or am I just late to the party? If I’m late the the party I think I’ll change my RSVP to no. Thank you, but no.

I know it’s tongue in cheek and a bit of fun… but it’s not really and it seems to be rife right now with Black Friday sales promotions.

As women, as I like to call us once we’re past puberty, we have financial responsibilities, dreams, hopes and aspirations.

Those dreams might be for a new handbag, a fabulous pair of shoes, a trip around the world, our kids school fees or even a house.

But we don’t need to do silly maths to justify our purchases. We don’t need to play dumb!

If we want to buy something and we can afford it, buy it! If we can’t right now, save for it! If we’ve got bigger financial goals than an immediate purchase, strengthen that delayed gratification muscle and focus on the bigger picture and don’t buy it. But make it a conscious decision that doesn’t have to be played down and justified.

Just like that fabulous marketing campaign around the concept of “play like a girl” that turned that theory of female ineptitude on its head. Sam Kerr and the Matildas were the recent exclamation point behind that campaign! And the movie Ride Like A Girl that showed us what amazing things can be done with perseverance and a goal – even if we have different anatomy than our male counterparts.

I think it’s time we do maths like women. Smart women. Women with a purpose and a goal (and even a brain!).

To me, Woman Maths – or even just Maths as I prefer to call it, is far more appealing (and empowering) than this concept of Girl Maths.

Let’s leave that on the floor of the ad agencies and don’t buy in.
