One month of 2024 is down and just 11 to go.

Not that I’m counting down the year or my life or anything.

I just like to keep track of time passing so I can make sure I’m maintaining momentum and progressing on my goals.

For me, setting goals used to be a bit of a set and forget thing. I’d start the new year or a new month or a new anything with all these dreams and aspirations of being better, doing more, having more… whatever that better or more was. But they were just words without any substance behind them. And they were rarely achieved – unless by fluke.

Things had to change if I actually wanted “more”.

So along came:

  • SMART goals that align with my values, purpose and life plan,
  • vision boards and journalling to maintain motivation and keep the dream alive and real,
  • milestones to track progress and
  • accountability partners to keep me honest.

I remembered that sometimes it’s a marathon, not a sprint.

These were game changers and brought with them the achievement of many goals and a whole ton of excitement at what I could actually do if and when I set my mind to it and had a plan.

So I’m one month in and checking progress against milestones and I’m doing pretty well. There’s a bit of adjusting needed here and there – because things change, but importantly boxes are being ticked and progress being made.

If you’re hoping to buy a home this year, make a bit of a dent in your mortgage, start those long-awaited renovations, upgrade to a new home or buy an investment property or anything else, I urge you to do some real work on setting those goals if you haven’t already.

Put structure around the goals, make sure they’re aligned with your life plan, purpose and values, that they’re realistic and within the realm of possibility, and team up with someone who will keep you accountable.

I promise you that achieving those goals through your own hard work and dedication is one of the best feelings you’ll ever have.
