Have you ever renovated a property?

I find that it’s a love-hate kind of thing. We usually love the end result, but it’s often a struggle to get there.

So what have I learnt from multiple renovations and years of talking to clients who renovate? A lot! So thought I’d share my top tips to help you navigate your next renovation.

1. Get recommendations to find your tradesmen. Ask around, check on social media and Google reviews. Do your research.

2. Ask for realistic quotes – not just quotes that will win them the job – then add a contingency of 10-20%. (Better safe than sorry!)

3. If it’s a new home, live in it for a while before you finalise plans. Ideally, you would live in the home through each of the seasons so you see it in all variations of light and temperature. This isn’t always possible, but it’s a good idea.

4. If you’re not confident with your choices, engage an expert. It’s often cheaper to pay a professional than to have to redo something of live with something you don’t love.

5. Make sure you’re really happy with the choices. Bring home samples, paint swatches, look for things you love in other people’s homes.

6. Get inspiration from magazines, Pinterest and holidays.

Make your home your castle and fill it with things and looks that you love.
