Twenty-one years ago, I came back to Australia after eight years overseas and couldn’t get a loan approved. My income wasn’t “recognised.” I remember sitting across from a lender feeling completely unseen, despite everything I’d built.
That moment could have discouraged me. Instead, it became the reason I do this work.
This month I was awarded MFAA Life Membership, one of the highest honours in our industry. When I look back on the path that got me here, it wasn’t one big leap. It was showing up, one client and one conversation at a time, and choosing to invest in other people along the way. Mentoring brokers. Sitting on governance committees. Writing two books because I wanted other women to have the roadmap I had to build for myself.
Here’s what I’ve learned watching hundreds of growth-minded women build wealth and scale their businesses: the biggest barrier is rarely capability. It’s permission. Permission to think bigger than the next milestone. Permission to see finance as a strategic tool, not just a hurdle to clear. Permission to believe you’re allowed to want more.
If you’re earning well but haven’t stopped to ask what it’s actually building toward, that question is worth sitting with.
You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to take the next step.
To every woman quietly building something right now: keep going. The world needs to see what you’re capable of.
