As the famous Daryl Kerrigan stated in the timeless classic movie, The Castle, “It’s not a house, it’s a home. A man’s home is his castle.”

But how does your “castle” support your health? Is it really your castle or is a dilapidated relic in need of some TLC?

So let’s break this down into the health of your mind, body and spirit.

Mind
Can you switch off and relax or is there constantly a project (or 6) that is demanding your attention?
Is it your safe space, clean and tidy and orderly – or is it something that looks like it’s in training for one of those TV hoarders shows?

Body
Is your home free of mould and musty smells? Do you get lots of natural light and fresh air? Is it warm in winter and cool in summer? Do you have space to exercise or are you in a neighbourhood that you feel safe and comfortable to go for walks, runs or go to the gym?
Do you have a kitchen that you enjoy cooking in, or are you close by some healthy meal options?

Spirit
Is your home a place that you’re happy in? Is it a source of stress or pleasure? Happiness or anxiety? How do you feel when you drive into the driveway or walk in the front door?

It’s really important to think about how your home is supporting or working against your health in a holistic way. If it’s not supporting you, then you need to make some changes – but the first step is to know what changes are needed.

It’s time to embrace Daryl’s sentiment and really make that home your castle.
